Chapter 10 · Traditional Japanese Games

No.195

Ohajiki: Counter Flicking

Japanese name: おはじき

Materials

  • 15–20 ohajiki counters
  • A rimmed tray or mat

How to play

  1. Spread the counters on the mat without overlaps. Agree on turn order. Play for scores only; equipment never changes ownership.
  2. On your turn, point out one counter to flick and one target counter. Choose a pair that can be hit without touching other counters.
  3. Flick the first counter with a fingertip. If it hits only the chosen target, collect that target counter as one point. Leave the flicked counter in play.
  4. A miss or contact with another counter earns no point. Change turns after every flick, even a successful one in this version.
  5. Finish when only one counter remains. Count collected counters; ties stay tied. Return and scatter all counters again for another game.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: push large cardboard discs. Primary school children: flick with a finger.
