- A
- Stacks of 3 cups
- B
- 3 pyramids
- C
- Return them in the same order.
Materials
- Nine stacking cups and a non-slip mat
- A stopwatch and recording sheet
How to play
- Nest the cups in three stacks of three, arranged in a row. Choose a starting side, left or right. For both building and taking down, work from that end to the middle and then the opposite end.
- Start timing on the signal. Use both hands to build the first stack into a pyramid with two cups below and one above. Release it with both hands before moving on. Build all three pyramids.
- After building all three, take them down in the same order, beginning with the first. Slide the upper cup over a lower cup and nest the remaining cup with them to restore a stack of three. Use both hands for the first two stacks.
- If cups fall during building, correct that pyramid before continuing. During taking down, nest the fallen cups and continue. Keep the timer running.
- In this book's introductory method, the recorder stops timing when all three stacks are stable in their original arrangement and the participant has released them. Try three times each, compare your own times and change participants.
Ways to adapt
Preschool children: build and nest three cups with an adult, enjoying the movements without timing.
