Chapter 10 · Traditional Japanese Games

No.209

Otedama Pick-Up Jacks

Japanese name: お手玉の寄せ玉

Materials

How to play

  1. Choose one tossing beanbag and spread the other four apart on the floor within reach. Use only one hand and begin by picking up one bag at a time.
  2. Toss the main bag below eye height. While it is airborne, pick up one floor bag and catch the falling main bag with the same hand.
  3. Set collected bags aside and repeat for the rest. Change turns if the main bag drops, another floor bag is disturbed, or the required bag is not picked up.
  4. Collecting all four completes a stage. Next pick up floor bags in pairs, then all four together in the final stage.
  5. Finish when everyone has had equal attempts or after ten minutes. On a later turn, a player may resume the stage they had not completed.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary school children: two bags on the floor. Older primary school children: five bags and progressive stages.
