Yo-Yo Up-and-Down Challenge

Japanese name: ヨーヨーの上下チャレンジ

Materials

  • A responsive beginner yo-yo that returns with a gentle tug
  • Its designated string, adjusted to the participant’s height

How to play

  1. An adult checks the string knot and adjusts the length so its upper end reaches about waist height when the yo-yo rests on the floor. Leave ample space around the player.
  2. Put the middle finger through the finger loop and check that it is not tight. Wind the string around the axle and hold the yo-yo.
  3. With the palm down, let the yo-yo drop gently straight down. Lift the hand slightly as the string nears full extension, then catch the returning yo-yo.
  4. If it does not return, wait until it stops, retrieve it by hand, and rewind. Do not swing sideways or toward people; beginners use only up-and-down movement.
  5. Choose a personal goal, such as one return or three in a row. Rest after about five attempts each. Stop shared equipment completely before passing it on.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary school children: one down-and-back return. Older primary school children: consecutive returns.
