Draw a House with One Shared Pen

Japanese name: 一本のペンで家を描こう

Materials

  • 1 sheet of large poster paper or A3 paper per group
  • 1 thick water-based marker per group
  • A timer

How to play

  1. Gather around the paper and hold one shared pen. Agree on a comfortable grip, such as touching the barrel with fingertips without overlapping hands.
  2. Announce that the task is to draw a house. For the first 2 minutes, keep touching the pen and draw one house together without speaking.
  3. For the next minute, talking is allowed. Discuss additions and complete the drawing. Do not pull hard against one another.
  4. At 3 minutes, let go. Discuss what was understood without words and what became clear only after talking.
  5. To continue with a new subject, use fresh paper and change who initiates the drawing.

Ways to adapt

Older primary: begin with one circle and one triangle. Offer an observation-and-feedback role to anyone uncomfortable with physical contact.
