No.267
Tie a Shoelace with One Hand Each
Japanese name: 片手ずつの靴ひも結び
Materials
- 1 laced shoe or lacing card per pair
- A thick, flat lace
How to play
- Remove the shoe from the foot and place it on the table. Sit side by side and agree that each person will use just one hand. Do not tie or restrain the unused hands.
- One partner holds the left end of the lace and the other holds the right end. Talk through making a knot, then complete a bow together.
- If it comes undone, resume from that point. Before an adult supplies the answer, discuss which end should move next.
- Once finished, swap which side of the laces each partner handles and tie the bow again. Check the result and share one helpful instruction to finish.
Ways to adapt
From middle primary: use thick laces in contrasting colours. If using one hand is difficult, agree together on suitable hand and tool arrangements.
