Materials

How to play

  1. An adult checks the LED battery covers and operation. Sit in a circle with one switched-off LED in front of each person. Choose which direction the signal will travel.
  2. The facilitator switches on the first LED. The next person sees its light and switches on their own. There is no need to pass the candles themselves.
  3. Continue lighting one LED at a time, passing the signal to the next person. Anyone who needs help operating a switch can raise a hand for an adult beside them to assist.
  4. After the signal has gone around and everyone's lights are on, quietly look at the whole circle. If anyone was missed, the facilitator sends the signal to that person again.
  5. Once everyone has looked, restore the room lighting. On the signal, switch off and collect the LEDs. Do not race; joining without saying anything counts equally.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: an adult helps with the switch. Younger primary school children: make one round in one direction. Older primary school children and adults: agree on a signaling method.
