Chapter 5 · Rock–Paper–Scissors Games

No.123

Meet-on-the-Path Rock–Paper–Scissors

Japanese name: どんじゃんけん

Materials

  • A marked path about 10 m long
  • Base markers at both ends

How to play

  1. Mark one continuous path with a team queue at each end. Leave space beside it for returning players.
  2. On the signal, both front players approach along the path. Stop before colliding and play rock–paper–scissors together. Do not push.
  3. The loser steps aside and returns outside the path to their queue’s back. Their next teammate starts while the winner continues forward.
  4. Replay ties on the spot. Reaching the opposite base earns 1 point; reset everyone and restart. Stop at 3 points or after 5 minutes.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: one-to-one with an adult. Older preschool children: walk a simple straight path. Primary school and older: try a curved path.
