Chapter 2 · Indoor Games

No.40

Fruit Basket

Japanese name: フルーツバスケット

Materials

  • Stable chairs: one fewer than the number of players
  • Three kinds of fruit cards

How to play

  1. Space chairs widely in a circle facing inward. One person stands in the middle; everyone else sits with one fruit card.
  2. The middle player names a fruit, such as apple. Players with that card stand and walk to a different empty chair.
  3. The middle player also tries to sit. Whoever has no chair becomes the next caller. Do not pull chairs, push or fight over a seat.
  4. On “Fruit basket!”, everyone moves. Play 5–10 calls and finish after willing children have tried calling.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: provide a chair for everyone, with no elimination. Younger primary school children: three fruit types. Older primary school children: try color or animal cards.
