Chapter 5 · Rock–Paper–Scissors Games

No.118

Newspaper Rock–Paper–Scissors

Japanese name: 新聞じゃんけん

Materials

  • One newspaper sheet per person

How to play

  1. Space one newspaper sheet per player on a flat, non-slip floor. Everyone stands with both feet on their sheet.
  2. Play rock–paper–scissors against the facilitator. Losing players fold their sheet in half; wins and ties leave it unchanged.
  3. Try placing both feet on the folded sheet. No one-foot balancing or holding onto someone. Step off whenever it feels unsafe.
  4. Players unable to stand safely become supporters. End after five contests or when one player remains. Unfold the sheets and bring everyone back.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: do not stand on paper; see whether a handprint fits instead. Younger primary school children and older: limit folding to about four times.
