Fold a Newspaper into Equal Parts
Japanese name: 新聞紙の等分折り
Materials
- One sheet of newspaper of the same size per person
How to play
- Give everyone one equally sized newspaper sheet. The leader sets a challenge: “Make creases that divide the sheet into four equal-sized parts.”
- Fold without cutting, so that opening the sheet reveals four parts. Allow about a minute to think; this is not a race.
- On the signal, open the paper and compare the number and size of the sections with a neighbour. Show one another any different folding methods.
- Next choose a challenge such as six or eight equal parts. If reusing the first sheet, you may trace the new creases with a pen to distinguish them.
- Finish after about three challenges. Take turns as leader and set challenges with more than one solution. Explain in your own words how you folded the paper.
Ways to adapt
Preschool children: fold in half. Younger primary school children: four or eight parts. Older primary school children: six or twelve parts.
