No.228

Match the Newspaper Holes

Japanese name: 新聞紙の穴合わせ

Materials

  • One newspaper sheet per person, with a large irregular centre piece removed and kept with its matching outer frame

How to play

  1. An adult prepares each sheet by tearing out an irregular central shape while leaving the outer frame intact. Keep each frame and its removed piece as a matching set.
  2. Give each participant one frame with a hole. Spread the removed pieces separately on another table. Agree to compare similar shapes carefully.
  3. On the signal, find the piece that fits your frame. Walk between places and test the fit on a table. Do not push others; return a wrong piece to its original place.
  4. When a piece fits exactly, check it with the leader. Anyone who finishes early becomes a helper, comparing shapes alongside someone still looking.
  5. Succeed when everyone's newspaper is back in its original whole-sheet shape. Redistribute the frames for another round, then use the paper for crafts or a tidying activity.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: two or three sets. Younger primary school children: six sets. Older primary school children: sheets with similar printed text.
