No.256

Newspaper Jigsaw

Japanese name: 新聞紙ジグソー

Materials

  • One newspaper sheet of the same size per group
  • Optional paper to lay underneath

How to play

  1. Give each group one newspaper sheet and briefly show the original page. Clear a large table and make room to spread the completed sheet.
  2. Tear the sheet by hand into about ten irregular pieces. Exchange all pieces with a neighbouring group and check that none are missing.
  3. On the signal, reconstruct the whole sheet. Discuss clues in pictures, headlines and torn edges, placing pieces together without overlapping them.
  4. When you think it is complete, signal together and check that the outer edges form a rectangle. This is not a race; groups may keep discussing until all have finished.
  5. End after about ten minutes. Share which parts were difficult and decide whether to use more or fewer pieces next time. Swap the puzzle-making and solving roles.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: four pieces. Younger primary school children: 6–10 pieces. Older primary school children: ten or more pieces.
