Chapter 5 · Rock–Paper–Scissors Games

No.119

Seven–Eleven Finger Totals

Japanese name: セブンイレブンじゃんけん

Materials

  • Cards showing target totals

How to play

  1. In pairs, show one hand each and aim for seven fingers in total. A closed fist counts as zero; any count from 1 to 5 is allowed.
  2. Reveal simultaneously on the agreed cue. Do not agree your numbers beforehand; predict your partner’s choice. Do not change after revealing.
  3. Add both hands. A total of 7 is success; celebrate with a wave and keep trying even after misses.
  4. In threes, either 7 or 11 succeeds. After three successes, change partners. Finish the activity after about 5 minutes.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: pairs aim for 5 and may discuss. Younger primary school children: pairs aim for 7. Older primary school children: threes aim for 7 or 11.
