Chapter 11 · Hand Games and Rhythm

No.222

Tap and Rub

Japanese name: トントンスリスリ

Materials

  • None

How to play

  1. Sit with hands on the thighs, the right in a loose fist and the left open. Keep both relaxed.
  2. Practise the right fist gently tapping the right thigh by itself. Then separately practise the open left hand rubbing the left thigh back and forth.
  3. Combine the movements. As the facilitator slowly counts four beats, keep the right hand tapping up and down while the left rubs forward and back.
  4. Stop on the signal. Swap both hand shapes and jobs: the right hand opens to rub, and the left becomes a loose fist to tap. Try four beats at the same tempo.
  5. Invite volunteer cue-givers and swap sides several times. Restart confusing movements with good humor. Finish with both hands resting on the knees.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: one hand at a time. Younger primary school children: combine movements. Older primary school children: swap on cue.
