No.275

Word Wolf

Japanese name: ワードウルフ

Materials

  • Equal-sized slips of paper, one per participant
  • A pen and a timer

How to play

  1. The facilitator writes one word on each slip. For six players, use similar subjects such as “apple” on five slips and “pear” on one. Deal face down; players read only their own word.
  2. Do not tell anyone whether they are in the majority or minority. Discuss the subjects’ characteristics for 3 minutes without saying the word, its length, its first letter or similar clues.
  3. At the signal, everyone simultaneously points to the person they think has the different word. The person with most votes is selected. For a tie, discuss for 1 more minute and vote again; another tie means the minority wins.
  4. If a majority player is selected, the minority wins. If the minority player is selected, they get one guess at the majority word: a correct guess wins for the minority; otherwise the majority wins.
  5. Reveal all the words to finish the round. Discuss which descriptions suggested a difference, then change facilitator or subjects if continuing.

Ways to adapt

Older primary: four players plus a facilitator, using familiar food or everyday objects.
