Kercang: String-Release Puzzle

Japanese name: クルチャン(ひも抜きパズル)

Materials

  • An assembled, single-layer kercang puzzle
  • Solution instructions matching that model
  • A tray

How to play

  1. The facilitator first checks how to remove and replace the cord on the single-layer model. Present it correctly assembled. Examine the rattan frame and the openings through which the cord passes.
  2. Move the cord ends and loops to explore which openings they can pass through. Do not untie knots, cut the cord or spread the frame.
  3. Keep the cord loose rather than pulling hard, and pass loops through one at a time. With two or more players, separate the operating and route-observing roles.
  4. Removing the cord completely is a success. Recall which opening it passed through and in which direction, using the matching instructions to restore the starting arrangement.
  5. Change players about every 5 minutes, offering one hint at a time. Give everyone two turns. Finish by checking the parts and cord and leaving the puzzle correctly assembled.

Ways to adapt

Older primary: single-layer model with intermediate hints. Secondary students and adults: increase the number of layers.
