No.321

Jegichagi: Shuttlecock Kicking

Japanese name: ジェギチャギ(羽根けり)

Materials

  • A commercially made jegi or chapteh with a soft base

How to play

  1. Leave space between players. Drop the shuttlecock from your hand, kick it upwards once with the inside of your foot, then catch it by hand.
  2. Once comfortable, try consecutive kicks without your hands. You may put the kicking foot back on the ground each time. Keep kicks low.
  3. Count kicks until it lands, then pass to the next player. Try three attempts each and compare with your own previous record.
  4. For cooperative play, three to six players form a circle and kick one shuttlecock between them. Indicate the intended receiver by name or gaze, without crowding them.
  5. After a drop, nobody leaves the game. Pick it up and restart with another player. Finish on reaching a shared target, such as five consecutive kicks.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary: kick once and catch. Older primary and adults: consecutive kicks or cooperative passing.
