Luban Lock
Japanese name: 魯班鎖(ルーバンロック)
Materials
- A large, three-piece interlocking wooden puzzle
- A tray for parts
- Assembly instructions for that particular product
How to play
- The facilitator first checks that they can disassemble and rebuild the puzzle. Present it assembled and observe its three parts and completed shape together.
- One player gently tries pushing, pulling or sliding one part at a time. Never force or twist a stuck piece, and use no tools or striking implements.
- When a piece comes free, remember its orientation and removal order, then lay it in the tray. In a group, discuss the next move; only one person touches the puzzle at a time.
- Once all pieces are apart, use the reverse removal order to rebuild. If stuck, consult part of the instructions, then try the remaining steps.
- Finish when the original shape is restored. After 5 minutes stuck, offer one hint and change players. Reserve six-piece versions as a separate challenge after mastering three pieces.
Ways to adapt
Older primary: three pieces with intermediate hints. Secondary students and adults: progress to six pieces.
