No.324

Shagai Horse Race

Japanese name: シャガイ競馬

Materials

  • 4 large shagai models with four distinguishable animal faces
  • 12 route markers
  • 1 horse counter per player
  • A large tray

How to play

  1. Line up twelve markers as a route. The near end is the start and the last marker is the finish. Place each horse just before the first marker.
  2. Identify the four faces of each model: horse, sheep, goat and camel. Choose the playing order and take turns rolling all four models into the tray.
  3. Move your horse one step for each horse face showing: one horse means one step, two mean two steps. With no horse face, do not move.
  4. Exception: if all four different animals appear, move four steps. Several horses may share a position; nobody sends another horse back.
  5. In this version, change turns after every roll. The first to reach the final marker wins; ignore excess steps. Change who starts for another game.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary: shorter route. Older primary and adults: extend the route.
