Word-Association Relay
Japanese name: 連想リレー
Materials
- Prompt cards
How to play
- Sit in a circle and choose who starts. The facilitator gives one familiar starting word, such as “sea” or “spring.”
- The first person says a word the starting word suggests—for example, sea → fish. The next person responds to that latest word—for example, fish → aquarium.
- Continue the chain in turn, speaking so everyone can hear. Anyone unable to think of a word may pass; others may help think of one.
- After one circuit, retrace how the first and last words became connected. Do not grade answers or rank ideas. Change the starting word and make another circuit.
Ways to adapt
Preschool children can choose picture cards. Younger primary school children speak through one circuit; older primary school children can try recalling the whole route afterward.
