Chapter 8 · Word Games and Logic

No.162

Category Knowledge Challenge

Japanese name: ものしりチャレンジ

Materials

  • Paper
  • Thick pens
  • A clock or timer

How to play

  1. Form groups of 3–5 and choose a recorder. The facilitator gives a familiar, reasonably specific category, such as vegetables or vehicles.
  2. For two minutes, suggest names in that category together. The recorder lists each different name once, without duplicates.
  3. At time, put down the pen. Groups read their lists in turn. Check uncertain examples together in an illustrated reference book or similar resource.
  4. Count the correctly listed types. Change recorders and topics and play two or three rounds. Alternatively, try to beat your group's previous total.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: sort picture cards. Younger primary school children: work orally in groups of three. Older primary school children: take turns recording and count the different types.
