Chapter 13 · Seated Activities

No.259

Copy the Block Model

Japanese name: 積み木の見本づくり

Materials

  • Two sets of large building blocks of the same shape (5 to 10 pieces each)

How to play

  1. Give both partners the same types and number of blocks. Choose a builder and a copier, starting with only three blocks each.
  2. The builder makes a low model. The copier looks at it and uses their own blocks to reproduce the same shape.
  3. When finished, compare both models from the front and side. Check the number, direction and arrangement of the blocks. Partners may point out differences and correct them.
  4. Swap roles and make a different model with the same three blocks. As confidence grows, add one block at a time. Keep the model visible throughout.
  5. Finish after each person has built twice. Combine the two creations into something such as a town or animal, give it a name, then tidy up.

Ways to adapt

Preschool: three blocks arranged flat. Younger primary: a low, solid model. Older primary: compare from several directions.
