Chapter 1 · Outdoor Games

No.29

Camouflage Search

Japanese name: カモフラージュ探し

Materials

  • 5–10 human-made objects
  • String marking the viewing boundary
  • A list of every object and its location

How to play

  1. An adult places human-made objects beside one side of a path and records each location. Do not bury them; they should be visible from some viewpoint.
  2. Walk one at a time outside the marked boundary and look for objects among the natural surroundings. Do not touch objects or cross the boundary.
  3. Keep your discoveries to yourself and quietly tell the adult at the finish what and how many you found.
  4. After everyone has looked once, allow a slower second look. When all finish, reveal the objects one at a time.
  5. Discuss visible colors, shapes and why some objects were hard to notice. The adult uses the list to collect every placed object.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: use 5 objects. Older primary school children: include objects with colors similar to their surroundings.
