No.117
Rock–Paper–Scissors Transformations
Japanese name: へんしんじゃんけん
Materials
- Three picture cards showing the stages
How to play
- Agree on three stages—egg, chick and chicken—and a hand sign for each. Everyone starts with the egg sign at chest height.
- Walk normally to find someone at the same stage and play rock–paper–scissors. Do not crawl on the floor.
- Winners advance one stage. Losing or tying leaves your stage unchanged. Find another same-stage partner and continue.
- A chicken who wins goes to the goal. An adult joins any stage without a partner so everyone can progress.
- Finish when everyone reaches the goal or after 5 minutes. Applaud every stage reached, then restart if desired.
Ways to adapt
Preschool children: two stages. Younger primary school children: three. Older primary school children: four. Do not move players backward or leave them waiting.
