Flag Commands
Japanese name: 旗揚げゲーム
Materials
- One red and one white cardboard flag per player; handles are optional
How to play
- Choose one caller; everyone else plays. Sit holding a red flag in the right hand and a white flag in the left, both lowered. Check colors and hands together.
- The caller gives one instruction at a time, such as “Raise red” or “Lower white.” Listen to the whole instruction and move only the named flag.
- If told “Do not lower” a raised flag, leave it raised. Practice simple raising and lowering before adding negatives.
- Correct a mistaken position and continue. After 10 calls, offer the caller role to a willing child.
Ways to adapt
Preschool children: copy an adult. Younger primary school children: add one negative instruction. Older primary school children: listen to two successive instructions.
