No.71

Flip the Color Cards

Japanese name: ひっくり返しゲーム

Materials

  • 20 rounded-corner cards with a different color on each side
  • A timer

How to play

  1. Make two teams, one color each. Space 20 two-sided cards on the floor with 10 of each color facing up.
  2. On the signal, walk to a card and flip the opposing color to your own. Touch one card at a time; do not carry away or stack cards.
  3. You may flip a card back after an opponent turns it. If both reach for one card, one yields; do not hold another player’s hand or body.
  4. At 30 seconds, let go and stand still. Count upward-facing colors with the facilitator. The larger total wins; equal totals are a draw.
  5. Swap colors, reset to 10 of each and play a second round. Rotate waiting players at this break.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: cooperate to make all cards one color. Younger primary school children: 20-second rounds. Older primary school children: allow strategy time, then compare after swapping colors.
