Chapter 9 · Drama and Teamwork

No.183

Charades

Japanese name: ジェスチャーゲーム

Materials

  • Prompt cards showing animals or actions
  • A clock or timer

How to play

  1. Prepare easy-to-act prompts, such as rabbit or brushing teeth. Choose one actor and show only that person a prompt card.
  2. Act using body movements only, without words, writing, or imitated animal sounds. Do not point at real objects or nearby items to reveal the answer.
  3. The audience calls out guesses. When someone answers correctly or 30 seconds pass, the facilitator reveals the prompt.
  4. Change actors in turn so everyone has an opportunity. Anyone who prefers not to act may pass and join as a guesser instead.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: show three picture choices. Younger primary school children: animals and everyday actions. Older primary school children: act a short scene.
