No.185

Draw Words as Lines

Japanese name: ことばを線で描こう

Materials

  • White paper
  • Thick pens or crayons

How to play

  1. Give everyone paper and drawing tools. Choose a word suggesting a feeling or movement, such as fluffy, jagged, or twirling.
  2. Imagine what kind of line could express that word, then draw freely. The result need not depict an object; short lines or dots are enough.
  3. Share drawings in small groups. Participants explain their lines only if they wish.
  4. Enjoy the different lines one word produces, then try another word. Explore 2–3 words and display everyone's papers to finish.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: make large marks with crayons. Younger primary school children: one sheet per word. Older primary school children: exchange line-only drawings and imagine the word behind each.
