Step Forward with Rock–Paper–Scissors (Glico)
Japanese name: グリコじゃんけん
Materials
- Start and finish markers
How to play
- Mark a start and goal 5–10 m apart on level ground. Stand side by side. Never play on stairs or roads with vehicles.
- Play rock–paper–scissors on the spot. Winners advance according to their winning sign: here, rock 3 steps, scissors 5 and paper 6.
- Count small steps to the Japanese chants: rock “gu-ri-ko”; scissors “cho-ko-re-e-to”; paper “pa-i-na-p-pu-ru.” Keep the agreed counts of 3, 5 and 6.
- Replay if no winner is determined. When someone reaches the goal, applaud, return everyone to the start and repeat 2–3 times.
Ways to adapt
Preschool children: two players with an adult counting. Younger primary school children: check step counts. Older primary school children: agree your own counts for each sign.
