Materials

How to play

  1. Place nine pawns face up along one back edge and nine face down along the opposite edge. Choose who moves first.
  2. Alternate moving one piece. It may travel any unobstructed distance horizontally or vertically, but cannot jump pieces or move diagonally.
  3. If your move sandwiches opposing pieces between two of your own pieces in a row or column, remove the captured pieces. Captured pieces do not return.
  4. This introductory version uses only two-piece sandwich captures, not edge-surround captures or victory by a three-piece lead. A piece is not captured merely by moving itself between enemy pieces.
  5. The first player to capture five opposing pieces wins. If stopping after 15 minutes, compare capture totals. Swap the first player for another game.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary school children: discuss moves with an adult. Older primary school children: add edge captures.
