Build Kanji from Parts

Japanese name: 漢字合わせ

Materials

  • Cards showing components of kanji the children have learned
  • A kanji chart for checking answers

How to play

  1. Prepare cards showing parts of kanji the participants have already learned: for example, 木 + 木 makes 林, and 日 + 月 makes 明. Check each part's orientation when combined.
  2. Spread the cards face up. Look for two- or three-card combinations that form a kanji.
  3. Arrange a discovered character and show it to the group. Give its reading if you know it. Check the shape together against a kanji chart.
  4. Set completed characters aside without returning their cards. Continue with the remaining parts. Accept other valid combinations after checking the chart.
  5. Count the characters made within the time. Change who arranges the cards, return the parts, and see whether other characters can be made.

Ways to adapt

Not suitable for preschool children. Younger primary school children: two parts of familiar kanji. Older primary school children: include radicals and three-part characters.
