Chapter 10 · Traditional Japanese Games

No.200

Karuta Card Grab

Japanese name: かるた取り

Materials

How to play

  1. Spread the answer cards face up within everyone's view. Choose one reader. Players sit with hands away from the cards.
  2. The reader reads one card. Each player may touch only one matching answer card. The first to touch it keeps it; do not wrestle over cards.
  3. For a simultaneous touch, set the matching reading card at the back of the reading pile to retry later. After a wrong touch, return the answer card and sit out the next call as an observer.
  4. The reader checks each claimed card and waits for hands to return before reading again. Keep the same procedure even when few cards remain.
  5. After all cards have been read, count collected cards to finish. Invite a new reader. For a homemade set, children may create pictures and descriptions of familiar objects.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: ten large picture cards. Younger primary school children: twenty cards. Older primary school children: local-themed or original cards.
