Make a Long Newspaper Strip
Japanese name: 新聞紙をながくつなぐ
Materials
- One equally sized newspaper sheet per person
- A floor line for comparing strip lengths
How to play
- Give each person one newspaper sheet and ask, “How long a single connected strip can you make without separating the paper?” Do not use scissors or tape.
- Tear a narrow strip from one edge with your fingers. Near the opposite edge, leave a small unbroken section and turn the tear in a new direction. Repeat to make one connected strip.
- If the strip breaks, keep the longest section made so far and try again with the remaining paper. Work in your own space without pulling another person's paper.
- After about 2–3 minutes, spread strips on the floor to compare lengths. Align the starting ends with a floor line; lifting a strip to measure it can make it tear.
- Show one another which tearing method produced a long strip. Try with a second sheet and finish. The strips can later become pretend paths or craft materials.
Ways to adapt
Preschool children: wide strips. Younger primary school children: compare lengths. Older primary school children: explore designs with equal amounts of paper.
