Musical Chairs
Japanese name: いす取りゲーム
Materials
- Stable chairs: one fewer than the number of players
- Music and playback equipment
How to play
- Arrange chairs in a circle with their backs inward. Agree not to run, push or pull chairs, and choose a music controller.
- Walk around the outside in one direction while the music plays. Do not wait directly in front of a chair.
- When music stops, sit one per nearby chair. If two people contest a seat, both stand and use rock–paper–scissors before sitting.
- Anyone without a seat helps with music or observation. Remove one chair and restart. The person in the final chair wins that game.
- Bring everyone back for a new game. Use several small circles and short games to reduce waiting.
Ways to adapt
Preschool children: provide a chair for everyone. Younger primary school children: small groups. Older primary school children: still walk rather than run.
