Chapter 12 · Games with Everyday Objects

No.240

What's under the Newspaper?

Japanese name: 新聞紙から何が出る?

Materials

  • A large original drawing
  • Newspaper large enough to cover it
  • Tape

How to play

  1. An adult draws a simple animal or vehicle, then covers it with newspaper taped only around the edges. Make a small slit children can pull to start tearing.
  2. Take turns tearing away a little of the newspaper from its edge to reveal part of the picture. Others discuss what it might be; no one needs to settle on an answer yet.
  3. The next person reveals a different part. Even those who recognize the picture wait for their own tearing turn. Participants who prefer not to speak may point instead.
  4. Once the whole picture is visible, compare it with the fragments seen earlier. Invite each person to mention a clue they used.
  5. Change to another drawing and finish after another round of turns. Collect the torn paper. Primary school children may also take turns preparing the drawings.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: a clear, simple picture. Younger primary school children: help prepare the pictures.
