Chapter 12 · Games with Everyday Objects

No.239

Newspaper Shower

Japanese name: 新聞紙シャワー

Materials

  • Newspaper
  • A large box for collecting the paper

How to play

  1. Clear slippery objects and small items from a spacious floor area. Provide newspaper and a large box. Agree never to press paper onto faces or put it in mouths.
  2. Tear paper slowly with both hands and enjoy its sound and tearing pattern. An adult can make a small starting slit for a child who needs help.
  3. Gently lift large pieces with both hands and let them flutter down. Do not throw them at friends; make a shower in a clear space in front of yourself.
  4. Imagine the paper as snow or leaves. You may sit, gather it into a pile with your hands and let it fall again. Never bury a face or whole body.
  5. Finally, pretend the box is a collection truck and gather the scattered paper together. Finish only when even the small scraps have been picked up.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: touch and tear. Younger primary school children: compare how the paper tears.
