No.236

Newspaper Fashion Show

Japanese name: 新聞紙ファッションショー

Materials

  • Newspaper
  • Tape
  • Scissors if needed
  • Coloured paper for decorating

How to play

  1. Form groups of 2–5 and agree who will make and who will wear the design. Anyone who does not want to wear it can choose a piece to display on a doll or chair.
  2. Fold, roll and layer newspaper to make hats or tops. Do not stick tape directly onto the body or use any string or strip that goes around the neck.
  3. Join paper to paper with tape, checking the fit with the wearer. Leave the face, hands and feet clear, and keep hems short enough not to step on when walking.
  4. When time is up, each group introduces its creation's name and design ideas. The wearer poses in place and others each mention one part they like.
  5. Finish after all groups have shown their work. Volunteers may take turns wearing it. Separate paper and tape as far as practical for disposal, and collect every floor scrap.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: one small accessory. Younger primary school children: make a costume in pairs. Older primary school children: use a theme.
