Play-Parachute Activities

Japanese name: パラバルーン

Materials

  • One purpose-made play parachute; check its specified ages and participant limit

How to play

  1. Stand or sit around the parachute with space between neighbors and hold its edge in both hands. Adults join the circle. Spread it at a comfortable holding height.
  2. On the facilitator's cue, move it gently up and down to make small waves. On “Stop,” still the fabric and look at its shape.
  3. Without moving your feet, use your arms to make slow, larger waves. Do not pull forcefully; match your neighbors' lifting and lowering speed.
  4. Lift together, then lower the edges to the floor simultaneously to trap air and make a dome. Everyone stays outside the fabric and watches it inflate.
  5. Link one small-wave, large-wave, and dome sequence. On the final cue, place the fabric on the floor, let go, and finish.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: sit and begin with small waves. Younger primary school children: progress to the dome. Older primary school children: agree on cues and create a short sequence.
