Guess the Overlapping Syllables

Japanese name: ステレオことば当て

Materials

  • Cards for the sounds in the chosen word
  • Paper and pen

How to play

  1. Choose a presenting team of three and one familiar word with three spoken parts. The Japanese example is sa–ka–na, meaning fish; “ba–na–na” is another possible choice. Assign one part to each presenter.
  2. Stand side by side. On the signal, all three say their assigned sound once at the same time. Use normal, audible voices rather than shouting.
  3. Listeners discuss in groups and guess the word. If necessary, hear the sounds again and work out their order.
  4. Reveal the word and change presenters. Finish after each group has presented once, then share one helpful listening strategy.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary school children: use two spoken parts. Children in the middle primary school grades: three. Older primary school children: four. For preschool children, present one sound at a time rather than simultaneously.
