No.70

Wind-the-String Race

Japanese name: 糸巻き競争

Materials

  • One sturdy paper tube per player
  • About 60 cm of yarn per player
  • One lightweight paper fish per player
  • Tape

How to play

  1. An adult fixes one end of yarn to the center of a paper tube and the other to a paper fish. Use equal yarn lengths and fish sizes.
  2. Sit in a row with tubes in both hands. Extend yarn forward and place fish on the same start line.
  3. On the signal, rotate the tube toward you to wind the yarn and draw in the fish. Do not pull the yarn by hand or stand and move toward it.
  4. Finish when your fish reaches the goal line near you. Applaud the first arrival, then continue until everyone has finished.
  5. Extend the yarn again with an adult and repeat. You may focus on winding more smoothly rather than speed.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: turn one tube together with an adult. Younger primary school children: use the main rules. Older primary school children: make the equipment with equal yarn lengths.
