No.38

Walking Rally

Japanese name: ウォークラリー

Materials

  • A strip map showing junctions in sequence
  • Checkpoint questions
  • Answer sheets and writing tools
  • A clock at the base

How to play

  1. An adult makes a strip map showing successive junctions and prepares 3–5 observation questions. Allow a comfortable walking time for returning.
  2. Each group checks its position and the arrow in the first map panel. Set off at intervals of 3–5 minutes.
  3. Read the panels in order and stay together. At each checkpoint, discuss the question and record an answer.
  4. If lost, return to the last known location. Use a traffic-free area and do not turn it into a running race.
  5. Return together to the base. Award 10 points per correct answer. Use walking time only for reflection, not ranking, and finish by sharing scenery noticed.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary school children: adult accompaniment, with no time-based score. Older primary school children: read the strip map.
