Chapter 2 · Indoor Games

No.60

Which Hand?

Japanese name: どっちの手に入ってる

Materials

  • One small soft cloth ball that can be concealed in a hand

How to play

  1. Choose a hider and guesser. An adult checks the object; do not use sharp objects or hard small items that could be swallowed.
  2. The hider puts both hands behind their back and places the cloth ball in just one hand. Close both hands gently enough to conceal it.
  3. Show both closed hands in front. The guesser chooses right or left by pointing or speaking. Do not force a hand open.
  4. The hider opens both hands. The guess is correct if the ball is in the chosen hand. Show both hands before each new attempt.
  5. After three attempts each, swap roles. If keeping score, compare correct guesses; on a tie, try one more round together.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: an adult hides the object. Younger primary school children: take turns for three attempts. Older primary school children: also explain the reasoning behind guesses.
