Materials

  • 1 large, soft target ball
  • 2 small, soft rolling balls per person
  • Boundary markers

How to play

  1. Stand in a single line. At least 10 m ahead, mark a target path parallel to the line, with a marker at each end. An adult operates the target ball.
  2. The adult stands well clear of the end of the player line, signals readiness and rolls the large ball along the ground from one end of its path to the other.
  3. Without crossing their line, players roll small balls underarm towards the moving target. Allow up to two balls per person on each pass. Never aim at people.
  4. When the target passes the end marker, everyone stops. Wait for the adult’s safety check, then retrieve together. Never chase a ball without the signal.
  5. Each small ball touching the target counts as one shared success. Make five return journeys, compare the total, then adjust the distance or target speed.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary: large, slow target. Older primary: vary its speed. Preschool: work with an adult over a shorter rolling distance.
