Kabaddi: A Tail-Tag Adaptation

Japanese name: カバディ(しっぽ取り体験版)

Materials

  • 1 short cloth tail, loosely tucked at the side of the waist
  • Court-marking equipment
  • A timer for 15-second turns

How to play

  1. Form two teams of four or five and divide the court into two halves with a centre line. Decide the order of attackers. The first attacker loosely tucks the cloth tail at the side of their waist.
  2. At the signal, one attacker enters the opponents’ half, tries to gently tag defenders on the upper arm, and returns across the centre line to their own half. Count each defender at most once.
  3. Defenders may take only the cloth tail. Grabbing bodies or clothing, pushing and holding are prohibited. The attacker must not protect the tail with a hand.
  4. Returning within 15 seconds with the tail still in place scores one point for each defender tagged. Losing the tail, going out of bounds or running out of time ends that attack with zero points.
  5. Teams alternate individual attacks until everyone has attacked once. Play two complete rounds and compare total points. Breathe normally; do not hold your breath.

Ways to adapt

Older primary: walk and aim to tag one defender. Secondary students and adults: try tagging two or more.
