Materials
- A stopwatch
- A measuring tape
- 1 starting-position marker per person
How to play
- Mark a shared finish line and separate straight lanes to prevent collisions. An adult measures how far each player can run in 6 seconds, twice.
- Average each person’s two distances. Measure that distance back from the finish and place their individual starting marker there.
- Stand at your own marker. Start together on the signal and run within your own lane, aiming for everyone to reach the finish at about the same time.
- Do not rank the finishers. Check the gap between first and last arrivals. Move early finishers’ markers slightly back and late finishers’ markers slightly forward.
- Try three runs, with rests between. Reducing the arrival gap is a shared success. Finish by recognising everyone’s effort.
Ways to adapt
Preschool: walk beside an adult without measuring, enjoying a shared arrival. Younger primary: shorter distances. Older primary: increase running time. The activity can also be done walking.
