Jukskei: An Introduction
Japanese name: ユクスケイ(入門)
Materials
- Purpose-made jukskei skeis: 2 per player
- A sand target bed, peg and positioning cord
- A throwing-line marker, measuring tape and score sheet
How to play
- A qualified instructor sets up the sand bed and peg. Form two teams of four, each player with two skeis. Normally allow at least 10 m from throwing line to peg. Choose the order.
- One player from the first team holds each skei by its handle and throws both underarm from beside the leg. An opposing player then throws two. Alternate until all eight players have thrown.
- Knocking down the peg scores three points. The instructor resets it only after signalling a stop to throwing. Other participants must not enter to retrieve equipment.
- After all sixteen skeis, measure those within 46 cm of the peg’s centre. Each of your skeis closer than the opponents’ closest skei adds one point.
- Confirm both scores before retrieving. Continue to an agreed finish time, such as 20 minutes, then compare totals. Change the starting team and internal order next time.
Ways to adapt
Not intended for preschool or younger primary. For older primary sessions at specialist venues, the instructor sets age-appropriate distances. Do not improvise the activity without the required equipment.
