No.298

Koolchee: Meet the Rolling Balls

Japanese name: クールチー(転がる球を合わせる)

Materials

  • 2–3 soft, rollable balls per person
  • Markers for end lines and safety zones

How to play

  1. The two groups stand behind opposite end lines. Mark a 2 m safety zone immediately in front of each line. The space between these zones is the central collision area.
  2. On an adult’s signal, begin by rolling one ball from each side along the ground. Aim your ball at a moving ball approaching from the other side.
  3. Stay behind your line. Never throw balls into the air or run into the middle. Check nearby feet, people and loose balls before rolling.
  4. Each collision between balls in the central area counts as one shared success for both groups. Collisions in the safety zones do not count. Continue with the next balls.
  5. When everyone has used their balls, stop. Retrieve only on the adult’s signal. Repeat for three rounds and record the combined number of successes.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary: end lines about 10 m apart, with success for central collisions. Older primary: vary rolling speeds. Preschool: roll one ball at a time beside an adult.
