Look Up, Look Down: Signal When Eyes Meet
Japanese name: ルックアップ・ルックダウン(目が合ったら合図)
Materials
- None
How to play
- Form a circle and choose a facilitator. Offer two ways to indicate a choice: looking towards the person or indicating them with an open hand. Choose cues everyone feels comfortable using.
- At “Look down”, look at your feet and silently choose one person for the next round. Do not reveal the choice with your face or hands yet.
- At “Look up”, everyone looks towards their chosen person at once. Anyone not using eye contact indicates their choice with an open hand. Keep your original choice.
- If two people chose each other, they wave one hand and say “Match!” Everyone else waits, choosing again at the next “Look down”.
- After ten rounds, reflect on how often choices matched. Change facilitators and play again if people wish.
Ways to adapt
Younger primary: practise choosing in groups of three or four. Older players and adults also participate voluntarily; never require eye contact. Play seated if preferred.
