Chapter 16 · Indoor Games from Around the World

No.307

Book Cricket

Japanese name: ブッククリケット

Materials

  • A thick, expendable book with readable even-numbered page numbers
  • A score sheet
  • Writing materials

How to play

  1. Choose who bats first. Start at zero, close the book and put it on your lap or a table. Do not use a treasured or fragile book.
  2. The batter opens the book anywhere and checks the last digit of the even-numbered page. Add two, four or six points if that digit is 2, 4 or 6.
  3. In this version, 8 scores no points but is not out. If the opened page has no number, close the book and choose again.
  4. A final digit of 0 means out. Record the total and swap batters. This version allows one out each; the second batter also starts from zero.
  5. The second batter wins immediately on exceeding the first total. If out before doing so, the first batter wins; equal scores are a draw. Swap who bats first for the next game.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary: one out, with recording help. Older primary and adults: three outs.
